Almost Live #95 | Crowd Sourced Description – VMF

Wednesday Aug 10, 2022 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time online Zoom

Thanks to the Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF), the streets of Vancouver are full of murals. Since launching in 2016, the festival is responsible for the installation of over 300 murals by a diverse range of artists, most of them local. We wanted to find a way to make them more accessible to the blind and partially sighted community.

One of the things that makes public art so great is the enormous variety of response a single installation can evoke, from being ignored to vilified to adored and everything in between. VocalEye’s Crowd Source Description Projects were designed to gather a diverse range of responses to an art work and share it with the blind community. Sounded like a perfect fit!

VocalEye’s Crowd Source Description Project, mural edition ran from April to June of this year. We selected 24 murals from the current collection (not an easy task!) and asked a small crowd of volunteers to help us describe them.

At this Almost Live special event, we will share highlights from the project and showcase a few of the murals that received the most descriptions. We are especially interested in hearing the community’s response to this approach to describing public art.

Host Amy Amantea will be joined by Vancouver Mural Fest co-founder Adrian Sinclair and members of the VocalEye team who will read the Crowder’s descriptions.

This is our last Almost Live of the season. Don’t miss it!

The VocalEye virtual lobby opens at 6:30 pm Pacific Time for some socializing and community updates with host Amy Amantea. The pre-show introduction will begin at 6:45 pm with Amy and guests. The featured show begins at 7 pm followed by conversation, Q and A and a prize draw.

If you’ve never attended a VocalEye Almost Live Zoom event before, you can register for just one event or sign up for the full season. A Zoom link and reminder will be sent to you on the day of the event. Almost Live events are designed for people with sight loss, but everyone is welcome.
