Almost Live Guest Reading: Overdale

Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time via Zoom

We’re thrilled to launch our 11th season with Canadian theatre icon Nicola Cavendish and playwright/performer David King reading from their latest creative collaboration, Overdale.

A fuzzy-memory romantic comedy, Overdale tells the story of Jill and Ben, who meet on a BC Ferry and are surprised to discover that they grew up in the same area of Winnipeg, among many of the same people. Reminiscing about the time in their lives when they seemed to always just miss meeting, they imagine the alternate paths their lives could have taken had they met.

A note from Nicola Cavendish:

“I have stepped far back from stage work and am presently involved in a Netflix Series Virgin River. Characteristically, I portray the Town Gossip and owner of the General Store. We are shooting Season 3 now.

Overdale was written because I asked David to “write something for us to do together again please Dave. We are getting older fast.” So he did. It is a two-hander about a couple who meet on the Langdale Ferry and spark up a conversation that becomes the play. I have loved this COVID-19 time off. I’ve had a big taste of an unobligated life and love every minute of being shuttered away working in my garden and actually seeing results because I have the TIME to do so. Retirement beckons with a strong finger. OVERJOYED to do this with David whom I have loved since I was 26 when we met at the Banff Playwrights Colony and now I am 67 and love him even more.”

David King has written extensively for the stage as well as for radio, television and film. Among his many works are Jessie Award-winning plays, Life Skills and Garage Sale. His script for his NFB film, For Gentlemen Only, earned him a Genie Award. His screenplay for the feature film, Harmony Cats, was nominated for a Genie Award. Mr. King has also acted on the stage and for film and T.V. and has recorded two albums of his Music: Pop Wisdom and Manaboutmidnight Late Night Radio Show.
