Almost Live | Raising Stanley/Life with Tulia

Wednesday March 31, 2021 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time via Zoom

Using the artforms of storytelling, painting and theatre, Raising Stanley / Life With Tulia celebrates the journey of a guide dog for the blind, from puppyhood to working guide, to pampered, retired pet. Storyteller and guide dog user, Kim Kilpatrick tells stories of the four guide dogs she has handled, accompanied by artist Karen Bailey’s paintings of the puppy she raised for Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.

VocalEye’s presentation will feature the archival video of the touring production starring Kim and her guide dog. Created with accessibility in mind, the production includes integrated description. Kim will be joining us from Ottawa for conversation and Q and A.

The VocalEye virtual lobby opens at 6:30 pm Pacific Time for some socializing and community updates with host Amy Amantea. The pre-show introduction will begin at 6:45 pm with Amy and special guest Kim Kilpatrick. The show begins at 7 pm with a running time of approximately 75 minutes, followed by conversation, Q and A and a prize draw.

Kim Kilpatrick – Storyteller
Kim is a storyteller, former Paralympian and disability rights activist who has handled four guide dogs. Born blind, she brings a fresh and unique approach to the art of storytelling. Kim has over fifteen years of experience as a storyteller and hosts Welcome to My World, a weekly radio show on CKCU, which aims to change the conversation and preconceptions about disability.

Karen Bailey – Painter
Karen is a painter of people; through her art she seeks to represent beauty, honesty and most importantly, humanity. Her official portrait of the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, 27th Governor General of Canada, was unveiled in 2012. Many of her works feature behind-the-scenes workers and under-recognized people. Past series have highlighted the working life of servers, hairstylists and Canadian military medical personnel in Kandahar.

Tulia – Guide dog
Tulia is a 9-year-old black Labrador retriever guide dog who has guided Kim to work, storytelling performances, meetings, theatres, concerts, on buses, trains, planes, and boats. Tulia loves working, lying in the sun, getting attention from her many fans when off duty, and she has a charm and charisma which is irresistible and a joy to be around.

Stanley – Model & Muse
Stanley is a 4-year-old platinum blond Labrador retriever. A calm diplomat, Stanley enjoyed all aspects of his upbringing with Karen and Iain, especially visits to the gallery and playing with his friends at puppy class. After working in Sudbury, Ontario for six months, he made a career change and now enjoys life with his paws up.
