Almost Live |Time Lapse: Posthumous Conversations

Wednesday January 20, 2021 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time via Zoom

SUM Gallery pays tribute to the memory and legacy of disability arts pioneer Geoff McMurchy with a retrospective of his works.

The founding artistic director of Kickstart Disability Arts and Culture and a member of the city’s LGBTQ2+ community, McMurchy died in 2015, having influenced a generation of artists in the community. An accomplished dancer and visual artist, he had an accident in 1977 that left him quadriplegic. After finding his creative voice again, Geoff spent fifteen years blazing a trail toward accessibility and equal rights in his work with Kickstart and with the BC Coalition of People With Disabilities. McMurchy was known for his elaborate art assemblages, often made of pieces salvaged as he wheeled around the city’s alleyways. This virtual tour will include a slide show of images from the exhibit with verbal descriptions and commentary from guest curators.
