Described by Rick Waines

Hailed as one of the most important works of 20th-century theatre, Angels in America is a timeless tale of companionship and abandonment that takes place when the personal became political. Set in New York City at the height of the Reagan era, Tony Kushner’s modern masterpiece contrasts the lives of five individuals struggling with identity issues alongside the crippling effects of stereotypes and an incurable diagnosis. Through spectacular staging, their stories intersect and crescendo in an exhilarating conclusion that will leave you breathless.

Written by Tony Kushner
Directed by Kim Collier

The action takes place in New York City, 1985.

PREVIEWS AND REVIEWS

“Despairing about the mess we’re in? Willing to believe in divine intervention? Let’s go.” –The Georgia Straight Spring Arts Preview

“Big, big, big. Under the direction of award-winning Kim Collier (co-founder of the Electric Company Theatre and winner of the prestigious Siminovitch Prize for Directing), Angels in America: Part One … is epic.” -The WestEnder

“I first saw Angels 21 years ago, as a 21-year-old. With its on-stage nudity, simulated sex, and frank talk of gay love and AIDS, it was the most transgressive play I’d ever seen. Today, it still feels relevant, but for different reasons. It’s Roy Cohn’s manipulation of American presidents and Louis and Prior’s debate about identity politics that resonates.”The Georgia Straight
