Beyond the Barre: Describing Ballet with Creative Access

Hosted by Amy Amantea

In July 2025, Amy Amantea was invited to Toronto by The Arts Assembly and Dancemakers to lead a workshop on describing ballet. Partnering with Annemarie Cabri and her Silver Swans dance group, the collaboration evolved into a unique exploration of creative access in ballet.

Together, they experimented with multiple approaches to dance description, weaving access directly into the choreographic process and devising an original piece shaped by movement, language, and imagination. The project culminated in a community showcase attended by local dancers, artists, and blind/low-vision audience members in a shared space where access became artistry.

Join Amy and Annemarie at the In the Describer’s Café as they share highlights, discoveries, and reflections from this remarkable cross-disciplinary journey.
