Philip Mix: Philip is an individual who sees how misfortune can often become a thread towards another way of being and expressing. He has been a visual artist for as long as he can recall, having had both successes and disappointments, in a career that spans 55 years and more. He was born in the Alberta prairies but calls the island his home. His foray into poetry, began when he was young, but was dormant for many, many years. Now he sees it as another extension of his desire and need to express. That need comes out of a constant questioning, that is rarely satisfied with any answer. He has been diagnosed with bipolar condition since 1985, and though it often dampens his enjoyment of the Present, he is very aware how it has also contributed to his creative pursuits, which often go to places that search out the difficulties of life itself. He feels, in a way, fortunate, because the distractions and hardships that the modern world has brought , offer a reason for him to speak to and search out the complexities of choices and truth.
Valentina: Valentina is a Vancouver Island-based artist, poet, and co-host of Access Radio. Her painted works, My Goddesses, reflect her strength as a multiply disabled woman. Through every brushstroke and poem, she aims to reach just one person who needs to feel seen. With her dog Wolfie always nearby, Valentina hopes her creative journey sparks connection and understanding with others.
