Lite Nite | “Kat” A Margaret Atwood Story

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 at 6:30 pm Pacific Time

Almost Live episode #231

Kat is a sharp, ambitious fashion magazine editor in Toronto. After surgery to remove a benign ovarian tumour, she keeps the strange growth in a jar and names it “Hairball.” Around the same time, Gerald, her married lover and boss, takes away her job. Kat begins to see Hairball as a disturbing symbol of what she has lost, including the possibility of a child with him. She sends it to Gerald’s house disguised as a box of chocolates, knowing his wife may open it at a party. The story ends before we see the reaction. It’s dark, unsettling fiction about betrayal, power, identity, and revenge.

This piece, written by Margaret Atwood, was featured by The New Yorker Fiction Podcast and read by Jennifer Egan – a creepy piece in a style consistently Atwood and fitting for the approaching Halloween season.
